Why you would need to

Issues relating to the BIOS are uncommon, but problems may still arise. Luckily, there are 2 main ways to reset the BIOS of a computer, and you’ll find them below.

Note. After resetting the BIOS, it may revert to its last saved configuration after modifications have taken place instead of the default settings.

Method 1. Resetting internally from the BIOS menu

The easiest way to reset the BIOS is to access and reset it to factory defaults via its menu.

  1. Specific keys you should press during boot to access the BIOS menu may differ between systems, though common keys include: F1, F2, F10, Delete and Esc.

    • If you can’t access the BIOS menu by pressing those keys, during boot, a message stating what key to press is usually visible.

    • After you access the menu, locate an option called “Load Setup Defaults”

      • there may be an alternate name check for phrases similar to: “Reset to Default”, “Factory Default”, or “Setup Defaults”.

Method 2. Reseating the CMOS battery

It is possible to reset the BIOS by removing and reseating the CMOS battery.
To re-seat the CMOS battery, follow the instructions below:

        1. Turn off your computer, and remove the power cord to make sure it receives no power (battery connector on laptops)

        2. Ground yourself properly to prevent accidental damage to your system from static discharges

        3. Open up the computer, and find the CMOS battery on the motherboard (it is often located near your PCIe slots)

          • Example images:

          • Remove the battery

            • Gently pry the battery out if it is in a holder, and make note of which side should be facing up for reinstallation (+ or -)

            • If it is attached with wires, disconnect it from the header on the motherboard

            • Wait 1-5 minutes to make sure the system is fully discharged

            • Reconnect the computer to an outlet/power source (battery on laptops), plug any devices back in

            • Turn your computer back on, and configure any settings in the BIOS if needed.
